Phantom of the Megaplex

(2000, G) Director – Blair Treu 1h 29m

Movie feeling – Heartwarming

Very sweet movie with strong reminders of the 90’s. I enjoyed it and it made me smile for the innocence and morals. I remember going to the movie theatre to watch scary movies and always had to try change my horrified expression to semi-normalcy before the lights came back on after the credits. It only worked 40% of the time.

Movie Description – Pete Riley is a 17-year-old who lands a part-time job at a multiplex in his neighbourhood. He and his friends are excited when it’s announced that the theatre will play host to the premier of a major motion picture, with a number of Hollywood celebrities in attendance. However, when the big night comes, Pete has to contend with disappearing staff, malfunctioning equipment, and a broken popcorn machine.

Starring – Taylor Handley (Pete Riley – Elder Brother), Caitlin Wachs (Karen Riley – Sister), Jacob Smith (Brian Riley – brother), Corinne Bohrer (Julie Riley- Mother), Mickey Rooney (Movie Mason/elderly movie fan), John Novak (George – Julies boyfriend), Rich Hutchman (Theatre manager)

Haunted Mansion

(2023, PG) DirectorJustin Simien 2h 3m

Movie feeling – Wow

This is a good one. I know that Disney has been making a few bad movies that are based on the haunted mansion ride. Which btw is really amazing!!! Really love how the Imagineers made such a fun haunted house. So much work went into creating it and for its time it is one of the best rides ever created. Check out the video on how they made the haunted mansion here – How Disney made the Haunted Mansion Ride. Sorry, got side tracked, but the movie is wonderful and amazing cast! I was pleasently suprised by how good it was, and heartwarming with only little scares for the kids.

Movie Description – A woman and her son enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.

Starring – LaKeith Stanfield as Ben Matthias, a cynical astrophysicist turned tour guide, Tiffany Haddish as Harriet, a psychic with genuine abilities, Owen Wilson as Father Kent, a conman posing as a priest and trained exorcist, Danny DeVito as Bruce Davis, a college historian and professor, Rosario Dawson as Gabbie, a widowed doctor from New York, Chase W. Dillon as Travis, Gabbie’s son, Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota, the psychic, Jared Leto as Alistair Crump, Daniel Levy as Vic, an entertainment tour guide, Hasan Minhaj as a police sketch artist, Marilu Henner as Carol, a tourist in New Orleans, Jo Koy as a daytime bartender, J. R. Adduci as William Gracey, Steve Zissis as Roger, Winona Ryder as Pat, a New Orleans tour guide

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

(2019, PG14+) DirectorAndré Øvredal 1h 48m

Movie feeling – Unsure

Ok, parents, I put a lot of heart warming tales of halloween and sweet kids stories in here, but this one needs to be actually viewed before you allow the kids to see it. This one is scary. It freaked me out, and I’m an adult. Please see it before allowing your kids to watch. This one is actually scary. Beware!

As a side note, I think if one of these written characters was coming for me, and I realised I couldn’t escape… well… my main idea would be to do completely random crap. Then she’d have to write it in the story right? How funny would it be to interupt the ghost writing the story by suddenly belting out a sea shanty and skipping (even though a monster is chasing you?). To get a character being out of normalcy would seriously mess up the story. So, these characters are dealing with life vs death situation… why not act crazy to save your bacon? Would love to see this senerio play out if they ever make a sequel.

Movie Description – In 1968, the night of Halloween brings mayhem in a small town when a group of friends discovers a notebook written by a mysterious girl that foretells terrifying events.

Starring –Zoe Colletti as Stella Nicholls, Michael Garza as Ramón Morales, Gabriel Rush as August “Auggie” Hilderbrandt, Austin Zajur as Charlie “Chuck” Steinberg, Natalie Ganzhorn as Ruth “Ruthie” Steinberg, Austin Abrams as Tommy Milner, Dean Norris as Roy Nicholls, Gil Bellows as Police Chief Turner, Lorraine Toussaint as Louise “Lou Lou” Baptiste

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting

(2020, PG) Director – Rachel Talalay 1h 38m

Movie feeling – Kickass

I enjoyed this movie. It was fun seeing the monsters created by imagination and I liked that the kids found ways to get rid of the monsters themselves. I hope they make a second one with the spider queen, as she seems like a fun monster. The boogeyman was very well played by Tom Felton and I liked his comedic acting.

Movie Description – Recruited by a secret society of babysitters, a high schooler battles the Boogeyman and his monsters when they nab the boy she’s watching on Halloween.

Starring – Tamara Smart as Kelly Ferguson, Oona Laurence as Liz LeRue, Tom Felton as Grand Guignol/Boogeyman, Ian Ho as Jacob Zellman, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson as Berna Vincent, Lynn Masako Cheng as Cassie Zhen, Ty Consiglio as Curtis Critter, Indya Moore as Peggy Drood (Cat Lady), Ashton Arbab as Tommy, Crystal Balint as Alexa Ferguson (Kelly’s mum), Ricky He as Jesper Huang, Anisa Harris as Deanna, , Alessio Scalzotto as Victor Colletti, , Tamsen McDonough as Ms. Zellman

Mayhem

(2017, M) DirectorJoe Lynch

Movie feeling – Apathy

This movie is a bad version of the Belko Experiment. But it made me laugh so much when he explains to her during the negotiation that he is so much more intelligent than the executive level employees, because you actually need brains to do the work that they are incapable of. I find it such a true statement in all jobs now a days where the intelligent workers do all the work at the bottom of the pay and they keep promoting the idiots without any abilities or common sense.

Movie Description – Entrapped in a quarantined building due to the onset of a dangerous virus, a lawyer and his client strive to find a way to survive.

Starring – Steven Yeun (Derek Cho), Samara Weaving (Melanie Cross), Steven Brand (John “The Boss” Towers), Caroline Chikezie (Kara “The Siren” Powell), Kerry Fox (Irene Smythe), Dallas Roberts (Lester “The Reaper” McGill), Nina Senicar (Tessa), Jovana Prosenik (Dena)

Get Away

(2024, MA15+) Director – Steffen Haars, 1h 26m

Movie feeling – Amusement

Ok, well I love Nick Frost as a suprise funny character (Please see Shaun of the Dead and Hott Fuzz for examples). I always see his types of movies as that fun immature humor that always makes you laugh, even if you have grown up. He has done the same with this one, with a suprise laugh and a fun twist. Loved AIsling’s Bea’s acting and ability to turn serious into comedy. Well done to the entire cast.

Movie Description – Looking for a peaceful getaway, a family’s island vacation turns into a nightmare when they discover it is home to a serial killer.

Starring – Nick Frost as Richard, Aisling Bea as Susan, Sebastian Croft as Sam, Maisie Ayres as Jessie, Eero Milonoff as Mats

Bedazzled

(2000, M) Director – Harold Ramis 1h 33m

Movie feeling – Sweet

I loved this movie when it first came out. Very funny and sweet, plus the amazing cast play thier parts brilliantly. One of the best movies of all time, I also at the time thought that Brendan Fraser was a demi god after the Mummy… my actual favorite movie of all time.

Movie Description – Elliot Richardson is a shy man who is reluctant to convey his feelings to the girl he loves. Observing his sad state, the Devil grants him seven wishes in exchange for his soul.

Starring – Brendan Fraser as Elliot Richards, Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil, Frances O’Connor as Alison Gardner / Nicole Delarusso

Scary Movie/s

Movie feeling – I really should have grown up by now…

This was the dawning of parody movies and we all laughed, we all used to have the humor of an adolescent boy it seems… They were so much fun, but then they became a trend and now it’s been over done. I still laugh when I see the original, as most are easy laughs and a direct joke of the actual movie. (Click on posters for the trailer)

No One Will Save You

(2023, MA 15+) Director – Brian Duffield 1h 33m

Movie feeling – What the?

This movie is a “What the fuck did I just watch?” question mark. The poor girl seems to have severe autism, well I thought until the whole town begins to become aliens. I mean the isolation, the inability to communicate… deeper meaning, apparently not… lol. This movie brings back silent movie in a big way… but they even had text! This movie, no talking of any kind! Amazing! I am still astounded by the thought needed to create this weird movie? How, when and why? Was it a dare or challenge?

Movie Description – Brynn finds solace within the walls of the home where she grew up until she’s awakened one night by strange noises from unearthly intruders.

Dawn of the Dead

(2004, MA 15+) Director – Zack Snyder 1h 40m

Movie feeling – How fun would it be to be trapped in a mall?

I think this was the first zombie movie that I ever watched! I really enjoyed it. Plus, what a fantastic place to hide during a apocalyptic event! The begnning was the first time I had thought about what I would do in a similar situation for zombie epidemic and well now, I have actually thought through most events, if it did happen. But if truth be told, I also listen at night in case a horde of zombies were heading towards my house… but I am a bit odd, if you haven’t realised yet…

BTW Zach Snyder as director has an amazing reputation at zombie movies. Highly recommend any of his work (see Army of the Dead below this)!

Attack the Block

(2011, MA) Director – Joe Cornish 1h 28m

Movie feeling – Awwww

This was a suprise by how much I liked it. At first I was shrugging my shoulders at their teenage antics, but damn do they pull you into the story! It becomes pretty intense, while keeping the lighthearted essense. It was a good movie and has stuck with me as one of my favorite Alien movies.

Movie Description – A group of valiant teenagers ventures out to battle a savage alien incursion. With the invasive species jeopardising their vicinity in Southern London, they fight to succeed in their mission.

Starring – John Boyega as Moses, Jodie Whittaker as Samantha Adams, Alex Esmail as Pest, Franz Drameh as Dennis, Leeon Jones as Jerome, Simon Howard as Biggz, Nick Frost as Ron

Army of the Dead

(2021, R) Director – Zack Snyder 2h 28m

Movie feeling – I like that character… and they died. Hey! game of Thrones prepared me for this!

I took my time to watch this movie. I thought it was going to be another zombie apocalypse comedy trying to exploit the fad that everyone had decided to enjoy. I finally watched it and I enjoyed it. It is a bit silly, but they pull it off as a fun action comedy about the zombie apocalypse. The acting is brilliant and I loved the cheeky and odd/heartwarming characters they threw together. The ending broke my heart after giving me false hope. It was a real suprise and I salute them for the wonderful mislead. Worth a watch if you feel like an easy horror movie without anxiety.

Oh and also the wonderful Dave Bautista who you might recognise from Knock at the Cabin and as Drax in Gaurdians of the Galaxy, is perfect as the tough but sweet father and team leader! All the actors were really fantastic, but wanted to give Dave Bautista a shout out as I’ve recognised him in quite a few films I’ve enjoyed.

Movie Description – After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble and venture into the quarantine zone in hopes of pulling off an impossible heist.

Starring – Dave Bautista as Scott Ward, Ella Purnell as Kate Ward, Omari Hardwick as Vanderohe, Ana de la Reguera as Maria Cruz, Theo Rossi as Burt Cummings, Matthias Schweighöfer as Ludwig Dieter, Nora Arnezeder as Lilly “Coyote”, Hiroyuki Sanada as Bly Tanaka, Tig Notaro as Marianne Peters, Raúl Castillo as Mikey Guzman, Huma Qureshi as Geeta Ranjan, Garret Dillahunt as Martin, Samantha Win as Chambers

825 Forest Road

(2025, MA15+) Director – Stephen Cognetti 1h 41m

Movie feeling – Aghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! No, no, no!

I have not been that scared in a movie for so long!!! Damn, this movie made me close my eyes until the scary ghost went away! It had a slow build, but the scares definitly will haunt me for a while. Really recommend if you like to get a good jump scare! I will be sleeping with the lights on tonight lol.

Movie Description – Chuck Wilson hopes to start a new life after a family tragedy when he moves to the town of Ashland Falls with his wife Maria and little sister Elizabeth, but he quickly discovers that the town has a dark secret.

Dark Water

(2005, M) Director – Walter Salles 1h 45m

Movie feeling – Depressed

The main thing was the brilliant acting. Jennifer Connelly really did fantasticly as the leading lady. It’s a beautiful and tragic story. Story was amazing and really stuck with me. It is sad, so better drama horror then scary.

Movie Description – Dahlia hopes to start life afresh with her daughter, but haunting visions and eerie noises begin to daunt her. She must now find out whether the sounds are real or it’s all in her head.

Starring – Jennifer Connelly as Dahlia Williams, Perla Haney-Jardine as young Dahlia Williams / Natasha Rimsky, Dougray Scott as Kyle Williams, John C. Reilly as Cory Murray, Ariel Gade as Cecilia “Ceci” Williams, Tim Roth as Jeff Platzer, Pete Postlethwaite as Mr. Veeck, Camryn Manheim as Ceci’s Teacher

The Orphanage

(2007, MA) Director – J. A. Bayona 1h 45m

Movie feeling – Protective helplessness

This movie broke my heart a bit. It’s not the best movie, but it kept my attention and I was horrified by the ending. It’s one of those ones, that is hard to see where the storyline is going, and I was scared, not in the normal hair raising horror, but more the hurt horror that makes you cry rather than scream. Actually, I think it might just be sadness. Hmmm. Anyway, watch if you enjoy tragedy horror. Oh and also in Spanish, so if you don’t understand you’ll need to read the subtitles.

Movie Description – Laura and her family move into what used to be her former orphanage. Soon, her adopted son, Simon, tells her that he has five invisible friends. But, his seemingly innocent games take a nasty turn.

Starring – Belén Rueda as Laura García Rodríguez, Fernando Cayo as Carlos Sánchez Rivera, Roger Príncep as Simón Sánchez Rivera, Mabel Rivera as Pilar, Montserrat Carulla as Benigna Escobedo, Geraldine Chaplin as Aurora, Andrés Gertrúdix as Enrique, Édgar Vivar as Professor Leo Balabán, Óscar Casas as Tomás

Where to Watch (Australia) – Youtube (free), Stan (subscription),

Presence

(2024, R) Director – Steven Soderbergh 1h 25m

Movie feeling – Anticipation

This one is another sad ghost movie. I do know my current paranormal picks seem to be depressing rather than scary. It’s hard to find vengeful ghost movies at the moment. Think most of the ghosts are just representations of peoples grief. Hopefully we’ll get more ghosts like the scary one in 825 Forest Road soon!

Anyway, sorry, this movie stuck with me and it kind of felt like watching Paranormal Activity with a nice demon instead lol. Its odd when the people are scarier than the paranormal entity!

Movie Description – A family becomes convinced they are not alone after moving into their new home in the suburbs.

Starring – Lucy Liu as Rebekah Payne, Chris Sullivan as Chris Payne, Callina Liang as Chloe Payne, Eddy Maday as Tyler Payne, West Mulholland as Ryan Caldwell

Where to Watch (Australia) – Prime Video (rent/buy)

Hallow Road

(2025, M) Director – Babak Anvari 1h 20m

Movie feeling – “That’s a bad decision, don’t do that.”

Spent the whole movie telling the people talking, that they were doing something stupid and that they really needed to stop giving bad advice. This movie is very cleverly done and must’ve been cheap to make. Only two actors and some voices, with hardly any scenery needed. Brilliant performance by Rosamund Pike and it kept me involved in the story, which is hard to do. Thought the ending was a bit confusing and I didn’t really like it after the build. But definetly deserves a watch.

Movie Description – A couple receive a distressing late-night call from their teenage daughter after she accidentally hits a pedestrian. Jumping in their car, they race to get there before anyone else stumbles across the scene. As they head deeper into the night, disturbing revelations threaten to tear the family apart.

Starring – Rosamund Pike, Matthew Rhys

Where to Watch (Australia) – Prime Video (rent/buy), Fetch (rent/buy)

Heretic

(2024, R) Director – Scott Beck, Bryan Woods 1h 51m

Movie feeling – Thoughtful

Loved Hugh Grant in this and the two girls were great. Don’t know if I’m a bit insane, but I found Hugh Grants characters logic highly comforting, as I had many of the same theories myself. Ok, he did lose me at the homicidal maniac part, thankfully. But until then, he actually seemed like a pretty interesting person. It also might just be that I feel comforted from the sound of his voice, as I’ve watched all his movies lol.

I found the movie had a bit of a questioning, without an answer, as it both argued against and for organised religion in equal measure. Actually maybe not… Let’s face it, making the guy questioning religion a homicidal maniac does kinda say that the writer was in favour of religious ideology? I thought the movie was interesting, but could have done without the gorey parts, as they didn’t really help the story line. Possibly, a better ending was needed as I found the ending anticlimactic and a bit rushed. Otherwise was interesting and I didn’t need to skip through to the end, like some movies being produced lately.

Movie Description – Two young missionaries become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they knock on the door of the diabolical Mr. Reed. Trapped in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive.

Starring – Hugh Grant (Mr. Reed), Sophie Thatcher (Sister Barnes), Chloe East(Sister Paxton), Topher Grace (Elder Kennedy), Elle Young (The Prophet)

Where to Watch (Australia) – Prime Video (subscription)

Creep

(2014, M) Director – Patrick Brice 1h 22m

Movie feeling – Uneasy

Ok wow, this movie had me talking to the screen and telling the guy to run! I have heard a lot about this movie, but nothing prepared me for the hold your breath unease that it creates. I was pacing and preparing for a jump scare, which never came! It all happened slowly and very cleverly. It kept lulling me into a false sense of security, then creating a scene that you feel like backing away from, as a viewer. It times it out perfectly. I felt almost a sense of relief at the end because I could finally breath after the anxiety the movie had built. I really enjoyed the build and highly recommend to people who like to feel uneasy.

Movie Description – Aaron answers an online ad and drives to a stranger’s house to film him for the day. The man wants to make a movie for his unborn child, but his requests become more bizarre as the day goes along.

Starring – Mark Duplass as Josef and Patrick Brice as Aaron

Where to Watch (Australia) – Netflix (subscription)

Caddo Lake

(2024, M) Director – Celine Held and Logan George 1h 39m

Movie feeling – Firework (12 mins of anticipation and a second worth of kaboom!)

This movie was 80% boring, not building, just contemplating going to sleep, instead of watching, and then gets super interesting in the last 15 minutes. Unfortunatly, you actually need to watch all the boring bits to understand the ending. It’s kind of like eating all your brussel sprouts before getting a small bowl of ice cream… But the ending is fun, so it gets to be mentioned.

Movie Description – When an eight-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes, a series of past deaths and disappearances start to link together, forever altering a broken family’s history.

Starring – Dylan O’Brien as Paris, Eliza Scanlen as Ellie, Caroline Falk as Anna, Lauren Ambrose as Celeste, Eric Lange as Daniel, Sam Hennings as Ben, Diana Hopper as Cee

Speak No Evil

(2024, R) Director – James Watkins 1h 50m

Movie feeling – That is a really bad decision!

I’m not the biggest fan of slasher movies, because they generally focus on blood and gore rather than story. This movie suprised me by the details and the terrific acting of the whole cast. One of my favorite horror actors James McAvoy has given us another truly outstanding preformance.

Movie Description – A dream holiday turns into a living nightmare when an American couple and their daughter spend the weekend at a British family’s idyllic country estate.

Starring – James McAvoy (Paddy), Mackenzie Davis (Louise Dalton), Aisling Franciosi (Ciara), Scoot McNairy (Ben Dalton), Alix West Lefler (Agnes Dalton), Dan Hough (Ant), Kris Hitchen (Mike), Motaz Malhees (Muhjid), Jakob Højlev Jørgensen (Torsten)

Companion

(2025, MA 15+) DirectorDrew Hancock 1h 37m

Movie feeling – Omg lol

This movie was awesome! I loved the almost comedic questioning she has for what is going on and how the other characters are responding to the situation. I can’t say too much about it or it would ruin it for you if you want to watch it. I highly recommend you do. I should possibly have put this in the comedy section as there were some parts which made me laugh a lot… you decide. This one went straight to the top of my list and I really recommend it.

Movie Description – A weekend getaway turns bloody and violent when a subservient android that’s built for human companionship goes haywire.

Starring –
Sophie Thatcher
(Iris), Jack Quaid (Josh), Lukas Gage (Patrick), Megan Suri (Kat), Harvey Guillén (Eli), Rupert Friend (Sergey), Jaboukie Young-White (Teddy), Matthew J. McCarthy (Sid), Marc Menchaca (Deputy Hendrix)

Where to Watch (Australia) – Prime Video (rent/buy/subscription)

The Purge

(2013, R) DirectorJames DeMonaco 1h 25m

Movie feeling – Anxious

Ok, ok, I know, what took so long! It actually is because I was looking at prettier and shinier objects… Anyway, why the original is so special, is because it is original and please take note of this as you all know my view points on massive degradation due to remakes

It faces a logical problem and comes up with a thought process of if it could/would happen. All movies try scare us with the thought of apocalypse type things, but this one, is a scare from if they tried to solve it! Anyway, it provokes thoughts of natural survival and kind of makes you question how much people might hate you if given the chance… would they kill you? Myself, I would be locked in a panic room and have automatic weapons outside for the amount of people I tick off in a day…

Movie Description – James Sandin and his family retire for the night in their gated home in California. An intruder causes trouble and lands them in the Purge, a 12-hour period when all criminal activities are legalised.

Starring – Ethan Hawke (James Sandin – Husband), Lena Headey (Mary Sandin – Wife), Adelaide Kane (Zoey Sandin – Daughter), Max Burkholder (Charlie Sandin – Son), Edwin Hodge (Stranger they try to save)

Where to Watch (Australia) – Prime Video (rent/buy), Fetch (rent/buy)

Dark Harvest

(2023, R) DirectorDavid Slade 1h 36m

Movie feeling – You tried your best!

This was such a fun find. Ok it’s pretty bad, but in the same way that cult classics are bad. Imagine a stoner mixing Grease with the Village and you get this movie.

I also know that technically it should possibly be in the creature section, but the monster is actually a person, so it gets the slasher category. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Movie Description – Teens confront a legendary supernatural spectre that emerges from the cornfields of a small Midwestern town every fall.

Starring – Casey Likes as Richie Shepard, E’myri Crutchfield as Kelly Haines, Dustin Ceithamer as Sawtooth Jack/October Boy, Elizabeth Reaser as Donna Shepard, Jeremy Davies as Dan Shepard, Britain Dalton as Jim Shepard, Luke Kirby as Officer Jerry Ricks, Steven McCarthy as Coach Nelson
