Abakan River

Location –  Egypt (8 kilometres north of Giza)

Coordinates – 514 km

Discoverer – up to 200 meters depth

Course – It is formed by the confluence of the rivers Bolshoy Abakan and Maly Abakan. It rises in the western Sayan Mountains and flows northeast through the Minusinsk Depression to the Yenisey. It is about 514 kilometers long from the Bolshoy Abakan’s source, and 327 kilometers for the Abakan proper. Its drainage basin covers 32,000 square kilometers.

Bridges – In 1950-1960s Lengiprotrans designed a bridge over the Abakan River as part of the construction of the Kyzyl – Mazhalyk (Aktovrak) – Abaza highway. The construction of the route made it possible to reduce the distance between the Aktovrak asbestos plant and the western regions of Tuva by more than 400 km.

The bridge was built on the Aktovrak – Abaza section on the territory of the Tyva Republic. The length of the bridge is 245 m.

The Abakan River at the section of the bridge is characterized by high water velocities, which made it difficult to construct the bridge supports. During the construction of the channel supports, the pits were used for pits – this greatly simplified the construction of the foundations of the supports.

The entire road was put into permanent operation in 1971.

Fauna – Most species are of Mongolian origin—e.g., marmot, jerboa (a jumping rodent), and antelope. Siberian mammals (bears, lynx, musk deer, and squirrels) and birds (hazel grouse and woodpeckers) frequent the moist coniferous forests. Alpine animal life includes the mountain goat, snow leopard, and mountain ram.

Flora – Most prevalent are coniferous species—larches, firs, and pines (including the Siberian stone pine)—but there are also large areas covered by secondary birch and aspen forests. A forest belt is practically nonexistent in the Mongolian and Gobi Altai, but isolated clumps of coniferous trees grow in river valleys.
